2014 Untold Stories Luncheon of Black Women Film Network/ Evento de premiação da Rede de Mulheres Negras de Cinema

In March 2014, I had the pleasure to attend the 2014 Untold Stories Luncheon  organized by the Black Women Film Network - BWFN. This organization located in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, is one of North American institutions focused exclusively on supporting black women filmmakers and black women media professionals.

The last event of BWFN was a gala luncheon at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, where black women working in film and media of different categories were awarded for their professional performances. Besides the honorable mentions, three film students received scholarships and study grants.

Doris Derby. Dr Derby is an activist, documentary photographer and a retired adjunct associate professor of anthropology at the Georgia State University. She was active in the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, and her work is on the themes of race and identity of African Americans. She was a working member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (S.N.C.C.), as well as co-founder of the Free Southern Theater, and the Founding Director of the Office of African American Student Services and Programs (O.A.A.S.S.P.). Her photography has been exhibited throughout the United States*.

The Film and Media Arts Department of Temple University, where I’m a Master in Film and Media Arts candidate, supported me to attend the luncheon and receive my grant from Dr Derby, on March 2014, in Atlanta.

At the event, I had the opportunity to meet Dr Derby in person and all the members of the BWFN. I`ve also got to know the work of other black filmmakers, actors and producers.

Receiving the award from Dr. Derby was a great honor for me. I’m extremely happy to have my work recognized for such a distinguished professor and activist in a foreign country. It means that I’m in the right direction to achieve my goals to become a professional filmmaker and a promoter of social change.

Since our meeting, Dr. Derby has become a mentor and gives me inspiration to continue my work. Here is a link to see a video with her interview

Em março, tive o prazer de participar do evento "Historias nao contadas" organizado pelo Black Women Film Network - BWFN. Uma organização localizada na cidade de Atlanta, no estado da Georgia, é uma das unicas instituicoes norte-americanas que se dedicam exclusivamente a apoiar cineastas e produtoras audiovisuais negras.

O último evento do BWFN foi um almoço de gala no hotel Atlanta Marriott Marquis, onde profissionais que atuam no cinema e na mídia foram premiados pelo seu desempenho, atuacao, inovacao e performance. Além das menções honrosas, três estudantes de cinema receberam bolsas integrais e parciais de estudo.

Eu tive a honra de receber um premio da professora PhD Doris Derby. Dr. Derby que é ativista, fotógrafa documentarista e professora aposentada de antropologia da Universidade Estadual da Geórgia. Ela teve participacao fundamental no Movimento dos Direitos Civis no Mississippi, e seu trabalho é focado em temas de raça e identidade dos afro-americanos. Ela foi membro do Comite de Acoes Nao-violentas (SNCC), bem como fundadora do Teatro Free Southern e diretora fundadora do Escritório de Serviços ao Estudante Afro-americano (OAASSP). Sua fotografias foram exibidas em diversos lugares nos Estados Unidos *.

A Temple University, onde realizo o mestrado em cinema (MFA in Film and Media Arts), foi a principal apoiadora para que eu pudesse comparecer ao evento e receber pessoalmente meu prêmio e conhecer a Profa. Derby.

Receber o prêmio da Profa. Derby foi uma grande honra. Durante nosso encontro ela disse que se identificou com meu trabalho, por ser ligado ao ambiente acadêmico, à promoção da cultura negra através de fotos e vídeos assim como ter vinculo com a comunidade e o ativismo.

Ser selecionada por alguém com tanto prestigio como a Profa. Dr Derby é um reconhecimento enorme do meu trabalho. Desde então, a querida Dra Derby tornou-se uma motivação para que eu siga em frente e me aperfeiçoe cada vez mais. A professora é alguém que me inspira e um modelo profissional de quem quero ser no futuro.

Agradeço a BWFN pelo incrível trabalho que fazem em apoiar jovens cineastas e também a Temple University pelo apoio imprescindível. Muito obrigada!

Afro-Latin@ Short Film Program organized by the Afrolatin@ Forum at CUNY – NYC, March / 2014

In March 2014, the Afrolatin@ Forum, group formed by young black of Latin America descent based in NYC, organized an evening of screening of short films that depict different aspects of the racial issues, worldwide. The event was at the prestigious City University of New York - CUNY, in the Graduate Center.

Among the films screened, was "Nosotros, afroperuanos," the documentary that I directed with Danielle Almeida, on the work of black non-governmental organizations to promote racial equity in Peru. Most of the works exhibited were produced by young filmmakers. Other works that were screened include the documentary “Eu tenho a palavra” (I have the word), by Brazilian filmmaker Lilian Santiago, “Choco Jungle Project” by Mathew Mulholland, “Birthright Crises” by Miriam Neptune, “I, garífuna”, by Milton Guilty Jr. and “Cenizas Mouth”, by Juan Manuel Echavarria.

The films presented a broad overview on racial issues regarding black people in different countries.

A Q&A followed the screening, with some of the directors and I had the opportunity to participate. The discussion was about independent films, Black American representation in other countries, the importance of talking about social issues problems, and so on.

The invitation to present "Nosotros , afroperuanos " at Afro Latinos Short Screening was made by filmmaker Dash Harris, journalist and director of the documentary web series "Negro - the Docu -series about Latino identity ." It was a great opportunity to publicize my documentary and know the work of others filmmakers involved in race issues related to black community.

Em março de 2014, o AfroLatin@ Forum, grupo formado por jovens negros oriundos de países latino-americanos organizou uma noite de exibição de curtas-metragens que retratam diferentes facetas da questão racial nos países da América Latina e Estados Unidos. O evento foi na prestigiosa CUNY University, no Graduate Center, Centro de graduação da Universidade da Cidade de Nova Iorque.

Entre os filmes escolhidos, estava o “Nosotros, afroperuanos”, documentário que realizei com Danielle Almeida, sobre o trabalho de organizações não-governamentais para a promoção da equidade racial no Peru. A maioria das obras exibidas foram produzidas por jovens cineastas, entre eles estavam os documentários “Eu tenho a palavra”, da cineasta brasileira Lilian Santiago, “Choco Jungle Project” de Mathew Mulholland, "Birthright Crises" de Miriam Neptune,  “Eu, garífuna”, de Milton Guity Jr. Além de “Bocas de Cenizas” de Juan Manuel Echavarria.  
As diversas obras permitiram que fosse apresentado um amplo panorama sobre  as questões raciais, a aplicação de políticas públicas e as ações afirmativas em diversos países.

Após a exibição dos filmes, eu participei de um debate entre alguns dos diretores dos filmes e o publico presente. Alguns assuntos discutidos foram a ampliação da visibilidade de filmes independentes, a representação de negros norte-americanos nos países de presença negra no restante do continente americano, o conflito entre Haiti e República Dominicana, a formacao da identidade da mulher negra, entre outros.

O convite para apresentar o “Nosotros, afroperuanos” foi feito pela jornalista Dash Harris, diretora da serie de documentários “Negro – a Docu-series about Latino identity”. 

Foi uma ótima oportunidade de exibir o documentário e conhecer o trabalho de outros realizadores comprometidos com a questão racial. Em breve mais notícias sobre as exibições de "Nosotros, Afroperuanos" e outros assuntos relacionados a questão racial! Fiquem ligados!
